Autoregulation
Definition
Adjusting training variables (load, volume, intensity) based on daily readiness, fatigue levels, and performance indicators.
Why It Matters
Your capacity to train fluctuates based on sleep, stress, nutrition, and recovery. Autoregulation allows you to train optimally given current conditions rather than blindly following a program.
How to Apply
Use RPE or RIR to adjust loads session-to-session. If prescribed weight feels much harder than expected, reduce load to hit target RPE. On good days, push slightly harder. Track trends over weeks to inform programming adjustments.
Common Mistakes & Fixes
- ⚠Using autoregulation as an excuse to consistently train easier than prescribed
- ⚠Ignoring clear fatigue signals and pushing through regardless
- ⚠Not having objective metrics (RPE, velocity, bar speed) to guide decisions
- ⚠Changing programs entirely based on one bad session
