Spotting

etiquettesafetyspottingassistance

Definition

Providing safety assistance during heavy or potentially failing lifts, primarily on bench press, squat, and overhead press.

Why It Matters

Proper spotting ensures safety during max effort lifts, allows lifters to train closer to failure, and prevents injuries from failed reps.

How to Apply

When spotting: communicate lift-off and racking. Stay attentive throughout. Apply minimal force unless failure occurs. For bench: hands near bar, ready to assist. For squat: arms under lifter's armpits or on bar. When asking for spot: clearly state "lift-off" and "all you" preferences.

Common Mistakes & Fixes

  • Touching the bar during the entire rep (robbing the lifter)
  • Not paying attention as a spotter (safety risk)
  • Poor communication about lift-off and racking
  • Attempting to spot weights beyond your capability
