Drop Set
Definition
Performing a set to near-failure, immediately reducing the weight, and continuing for more reps without rest.
Why It Matters
Drop sets increase metabolic stress and time under tension, beneficial for hypertrophy. They allow you to accumulate more volume in a single extended set.
How to Apply
Perform your working set to RPE 8-9, immediately reduce weight by 20-30%, and continue for as many reps as possible. Can be done for 1-3 drops. Use primarily for isolation exercises and machines.
Common Mistakes & Fixes
- ⚠Using drop sets too frequently (very fatiguing, use sparingly)
- ⚠Applying drop sets to compound movements requiring complex technique
- ⚠Not reducing weight enough between drops
- ⚠Using drop sets when recovery is already compromised
